Our Mission...
Gift of Touch is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in Romania by providing infant massage and helping fulfill basic needs. Our organization works throughout the year to collect items and donations that directly benefit the children of Romania. In addition, our mission teams travel to Romania to share the gift of touch and help enhance the lives of Romania's children.How We Got Started...
Gift of Touch began when we (mission team leader Dianna Cox and mission team member Jill Quiner) returned from Romania in October 1999. While in Romania, Jill and I discussed starting a letter writing campaign asking companies and our community to help with donations of the many items needed in Romania. These items are in abundance in America and would change the lives of many people in Romania.With the letter writing campaign, we decided a web site would be helpful to inform people of our work and the needs of the Romanian people. We also speak at local civic groups and churches (see list of upcoming presentations). This web site allows a follow-up to our presentations.
Average women helping make a difference...
We are average women with average lives and income feeling the call to make a difference in a very poor country.Our efforts are on a strictly volunteer basis through Northwest Medical Teams International (NWMTI), a non-profit humanitarian group. Jill and I both attend Community of ChristChurch in Hillsboro, Oregon. We receive some financial support from our church. Our families are very supportive of our work and we could not travel to Romania without their emotional backing.
Meeting the changing needs in Romania...
Changes are currently taking place in the orphanage system in Romania. The government is developing a foster care program.This means abandoned children will be placed in homes with relatives. Our work will continue in the orphanages and hospital system. The emphasis of our team will shift to the community. This allows us to accommodate the changes within the country. This includes infant massage classes for foster parents, continuing mother/baby infant massage classes and delivering the donated items into the community. Implementation of these changes will be done in close partnership with NWMTI’s in-country partner, Heart of Hope Ministries.
